SIATech North County Students Learn About Palomar College Apprenticeship Program

On Thursday, March 6th, Norma Villa Cortez, a Career Technical Program Specialist with the Workforce, Community & Continuing Education Department at Palomar College visited SIATech North County Independent Study (NCIS) to highlight apprenticeship programs through Palomar College.

The State of California supports a formal registered apprenticeship training system. Apprentices learn occupational skills in the classroom and then put the skills into practice in paid on-the-job training while working for local contractors. Most students attend classes two evenings per week and work full-time during the day.

Students learn and practice all phases of the occupation in real-world applications. The apprenticeship wages are a portion of the journeyman wage rate that increases throughout the training program. As apprentices gain knowledge, skills, progress in school and accumulate work hours, their pay increases.

"Norma has become a regular here at NCIS.  She is a wonderful presenter – high energy, dynamic, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable," said NCIS Principal Craig Lewis.

Students who enroll and pass apprenticeship classes through Palomar College earn college credit. Those who complete all of the requirements of an apprenticeship program will earn a Certificate of Achievement from Palomar College in addition to a Journeyman’s Certificate from the training center.

Participation in an apprenticeship is a pathway to college and career and is a valuable resource for students.
