SASHS Students Enhance their Leadership Development

January 15-17, SASHS’s Student Leadership Team, which includes the Associated Student Body as well as Student Support personnel, took their first steps in implementing our Student Leadership Development Initiative, by participating in the one AND ONLY Student Advisory Board on Legislation in Education Conference, hosted by California Association of School Councils. During this 3-day conference, students representing various high schools across California gathered at our state’s capital to discuss current legislative topics within education.

A total of 70 Students or “delegates” worked around-the-clock, formulating proposals to help improve critical issues such as, restorative justice practices, immigration laws and other impactful technological programs. Delegate groups consist of the following personnel:

  • Speakers- Senate Education Committee presenters
  • Writers- Formulates the script to be presented. Performs edits, etc.
  • Members- Support within the group. Assists with timekeeping, supplies, and other miscellaneous items
  • Facilitators- College counselors and former student delegates who help to guide to proposal process
  • Researchers- Gathers data and artifacts to support proposal
  1. Once finalized, the speakers (3) in each group presented their proposals to The Senate Education Committee during a live, videotaped recording. Here’s a breakdown of the proposal structure:

1. Summary- The mandate or call to action

2. Background- Historical reference points/ events which draws the audience to the evidence of a pattern of issues

3. Problem- Identifies the lack or the gaps

4. Solution- Action steps to solve the deficit or issue

5. Legislative Precedent- Previous laws or court decisions cited by the delegates to justify the point to contention

6. Proven Results- Previous successful attempts by other school districts who enacted similar legislation

7. Rationale- The positive result. Who or what this proposal will impact or the social change desired

8. Fiscal Analysis- Financial implications of the proposed action(s)

Of the 18 delegates selected to speak to the S.E.C., two of our very own students Bryan Rodriguez and Eberly Solorzano took on the challenge and presented their topics.

As you can see, SIATech Academy South has worked extensively to cultivate our ASB and to improve our student leadership. Especially in a post-pandemic society, where many of our students and families were and still are severely impacted and slow to reengage. Taking the initiative to join ASB hasn't been an easy process as students are reacclimating to school and prioritizing their academic experience.

With that being said, our ASB has done an amazing job of unifying and leading the charge in terms of social impact and community building. From conducting partnership walks to hosting community-focused events, our student leaders are setting the precedent for their willingness to do their part in the work of social justice. The SABLE conference was a great opportunity for our students who are looking to shine as leaders to step to the forefront. Shout out to all of our student participants and support personnel for showing up and representing our school:
